Large Thin Slab of a Central Oregon Limbcast
$150.00
Limb cast is a rare and unique natural formation that is created when a fossilized limb or even tree a is buried and mineral-rich fluids fill the void, creating a replica of the original structure. These fossils are millions of years old and offer a glimpse into the ancient past, some even retaining the shape of the original bark . They come in a variety of sizes and shapes and can be used as a display piece in a natural history collection or as a decorative element in a home or office.
Central Oregon Limbcast Slice, measures 11″ x 9,5″ x 3/8″ thick. Extremely large crosscut of an agatized limbcast, this slice shows a very nice iris when you place light behind it or just position it in a sunlit window.
The area this was collected in was with permission from the landowner, the log was close to six feet in length and the diameter is 11″ x 9.5″, each slice is a one of a kind.
Limbcasts can be created when a tree is trapped in a volcanic eruption, trapping it under layers of volcanic ash, over time the tree is either destroyed by the heat of the eruption, rots away completely, or can partially petrify, but it leaves a cast of itself in the encasing ash, which is over time filled with silica and other minerals to create a possible perfect replica of the outside of the tree or limb. This limbcast is comprised of blue banded agate, quartz crystals, calcite crystals and some of the original ash is still attached
The last picture shown above was what it looked like during the excavation by one of the owners of this website.
